music · ·Villette Sonique, Paris

Sunn O))) is an American drone metal and experimental duo, formed in 1998 by Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson. Their music is characterized by massive, slow, and extremely heavy soundscapes, often perceived as an immersive physical experience.

Formed in Seattle in 1998 by guitarists Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson, Sunn O))) takes its name and part of its inspiration from drone pioneer band Earth, as well as the Sunn amplifier brand. The project quickly distinguished itself through its radical approach to doom metal and drone, favoring sound experimentation, ultra-low frequencies, and intense auditory immersion.

Sunn O)))'s music is an exploration of sonic textures, extreme volume, and resonance. Their compositions are often lengthy, based on slow, saturated guitar drones, creating atmospheres that are both monolithic and meditative. The group integrates elements of dark ambient, minimal music, and black metal, constantly pushing the boundaries of traditional genres. Their live performances are renowned for their physical intensity and ritualistic atmosphere, often accompanied by dense smoke and near-darkness.

With a prolific discography including landmark albums such as ØØ Void (2000), Monoliths & Dimensions (2009), and Life Metal (2019), Sunn O))) has solidified its reputation as an avant-garde force. Their collaborations with various artists like Boris, Ulver, and Scott Walker attest to their artistic openness. The band has exerted considerable influence on the experimental and metal scenes, inspiring many artists to explore the extremes of sound and silence.
