The Jesus Lizard is an American noise rock and post-hardcore band, formed in 1987. Known for their abrasive sound and David Yow's intense stage presence, the group left a significant and influential mark on the 90s.

Formed in Austin, Texas, in 1987, and quickly relocating to Chicago, The Jesus Lizard established itself as a pivotal force in the 1990s alternative music scene. The quartet, comprising David Yow on vocals, Duane Denison on guitar, David Sims on bass, and Mac McNeilly on drums (joining in 1989), developed a distinctive sound characterized by angular, dissonant guitar riffs, powerful basslines, and a complex, propulsive rhythm section. Their music is often categorized within noise rock and post-hardcore.

The band primarily gained acclaim through a series of seminal albums released on the Touch and Go Records label, including Goat (1991), Rapture (1992), and Down (1994). These works solidified their reputation for raw intensity, unpredictable song structures, and the visceral energy of their live performances, particularly those of David Yow, whose shrieking vocals and unpredictable stage presence were legendary.

Following a stint with Capitol Records for Shot (1996) and Blue (1998), where they explored a more accessible sound, the band disbanded in 1999. Their influence endures, having inspired numerous artists in the noise rock and post-hardcore genres through their originality and stylistic uncompromising nature. The Jesus Lizard has reunited multiple times for critically acclaimed tours, proving their powerful stage presence remains undiminished.
