Born on August 21, 1967, in Beirut, Lebanon, Serj Tankian is an iconic figure in the alternative music scene. He gained global renown as the lead vocalist and lyricist for System of a Down, which he co-founded in 1994. The band distinguished itself with a unique blend of alternative metal, Armenian melodies, jazz, and politically charged lyrics, becoming one of the most influential groups of the early 2000s with albums like Toxicity and Mezmerize/Hypnotize.

Following a hiatus from System of a Down, Tankian launched his solo career with the album Elect the Dead in 2007. His solo albums, such as Imperfect Harmonies and Harakiri, continued to showcase his versatility and lyrical commitment.

He uses his platform to champion humanitarian, environmental, and social justice causes, notably the recognition of the Armenian genocide. His body of work is characterized by intellectual depth and a constant desire to push musical and thematic boundaries.
