music · ·Festival Scopitone, Nantes

Man is a Welsh progressive and psychedelic rock band, formed in Swansea in 1968. Known for their extended guitar improvisations and dynamic live performances, the band developed a unique sound often compared to American jam bands.

Formed in Swansea in 1968 from the ashes of The Bystanders, Man quickly established itself as an iconic figure in Welsh progressive and psychedelic rock. The original lineup, centered around guitarists Micky Jones and Deke Leonard, fused blues, rock, and psychedelic influences to create a sound characterized by lengthy instrumental passages and incisive guitar duels. Their early albums, such as Revelation (1969) and Man (1970), laid the groundwork for their distinctive approach, which truly flourished in live performances.

Throughout the 1970s, Man maintained a prolific output, releasing several studio and live albums that cemented their reputation as a quintessential live band. Works like Man Live at the Roundhouse (1972) and Maximum Darkness (1975) showcase their ability to captivate audiences with improvised and engaging performances. The band underwent numerous personnel changes but consistently retained its sonic identity, sometimes incorporating elements of pub rock and blues rock, notably on albums such as Rhinos, Winos and Lunatics (1974).

Man cultivated a loyal cult following, particularly in the UK and Germany, thanks to their commitment to live music and their refusal to conform to commercial trends. Their influence lies in their ability to maintain a long and evolving career, inspiring other bands with their artistic integrity and improvisation-driven approach to rock. The band continued to tour and record sporadically for decades, leaving a legacy of authentic, uncompromising rock.
