music · ·L'Aeronef, Lille

The Roots are an American hip-hop group from Philadelphia, renowned for their innovative live instrumentation approach to the genre. Pioneers of jazz rap and alternative hip-hop, they are celebrated for their incisive lyricism and organic musicality.

Formed in Philadelphia in the late 1980s by Tariq 'Black Thought' Trotter and Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson, The Roots quickly distinguished themselves through their use of live instrumentation, a rarity in an era of hip-hop dominated by samples and drum machines. This approach forged their unique sound, blending hip-hop with jazz, soul, and funk influences, positioning them as pioneers of jazz rap and alternative hip-hop.

Their discography is marked by critically acclaimed albums such as Illadelph Halflife (1996), Things Fall Apart (1999) – which earned a Grammy Award for the track 'You Got Me' – and Phrenology (2002). These works solidified their reputation as an intellectual and socially conscious group, exploring themes from politics to urban life with rare depth and complexity.

Over the decades, The Roots have maintained artistic relevance and constant evolution, integrating new members and exploring diverse sounds without ever deviating from their foundational identity as a live band. Their longevity and influence are attested by their role as the house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon since 2014, exposing them to a global audience while continuing to produce demanding and innovative music. They are regarded as one of the most influential and respected groups in hip-hop history.
