music · ·L'Aeronef, Lille

Enslaved is a Norwegian band, pioneers of Viking black metal, renowned for their continuous evolution towards progressive and avant-garde metal. Formed in 1991, they blend Norse themes with complex soundscapes.

Formed in 1991 in Haugesund, Norway, Enslaved stands as one of the iconic figures in the extreme metal scene. The band, led by Ivar Bjørnson (guitars, keyboards) and Grutle Kjellson (bass, vocals), began as a major force in Viking black metal, incorporating Norse mythological and historical themes into their early works. Their initial albums, such as Vikingligr Veldi (1994) and Frost (1994), laid the groundwork for a brutal yet epic style, characterized by cold riffs, harsh vocals, and grandiose atmospheres.

Over the years, Enslaved embarked on a remarkable musical evolution, gradually moving away from pure black metal conventions to explore broader territories. From the late 1990s and early 2000s, with albums like Mardraum – Beyond the Within (2000) and Monumension (2001), the band began incorporating elements of progressive metal, psychedelic rock, and more complex song structures, introducing clean vocals and atmospheric passages.

This transition culminated in acclaimed works such as Below the Lights (2003), Isa (2004), and Ruun (2006), which solidified their reputation as an innovative and avant-garde band. Their subsequent discography, including Axioma Ethica Odini (2010) and RIITIIR (2012), continued to refine their distinctive sound, characterized by a balance between black metal aggression, melodic richness, and conceptual depth. Enslaved is recognized for its ability to create music that is both intellectually stimulating and viscerally powerful, influencing numerous contemporary acts across the progressive and extreme metal spectrum.
