The XX - 10 February 2010 - Le Grand Mix - Tourcoing

music · ·Le Grand Mix, Tourcoing

The XX is a British trio from London, renowned for their minimalist and atmospheric indie pop, featuring intertwined male and female vocals and sparse arrangements.

Formed in London in 2005 and solidified in 2008, The XX consists of Romy Madley Croft (guitar, vocals), Oliver Sim (bass, vocals), and Jamie Smith, also known as Jamie xx (MPC, production). The band quickly garnered attention with a distinctive sonic aesthetic, blending a minimalist post-punk approach with R&B and electronic influences, all enveloped in a melancholic and intimate atmosphere.

Their self-titled debut album, xx, released in 2009, received critical acclaim and won the prestigious Mercury Prize. It defined their characteristic sound: stripped-down compositions, delicate guitars, deep bass lines, and the whispered, intertwined vocals of Romy and Oliver, creating an emotional and often introspective dialogue.

Subsequent albums, Coexist (2012) and I See You (2017), saw the band explore richer textures and more assertive production, notably under the growing influence of Jamie xx, whose solo work also made a significant mark on the electronic scene. While maintaining their unique identity, The XX evolved their sound without losing its minimalist and emotional essence.

The band is recognized for its impact on the indie and electronic scenes, inspiring many artists with their daring approach to creating music that is both sparse and profoundly evocative. Their ability to transform restraint into a powerful force has solidified their place as one of the most influential acts of their generation.
