Nomeansno was an influential Canadian trio, active from 1979 to 2016, renowned for its complex and innovative blend of punk rock, post-punk, jazz, and progressive rock, characterized by syncopated rhythms and distinctive basslines.

Formed in 1979 in Victoria, British Columbia, by brothers Rob and John Wright, Nomeansno quickly forged a unique sonic identity. The band, often joined by a guitarist (notably Andy Kerr then Tom Holliston), evolved beyond punk rock conventions to incorporate elements of jazz, funk, and progressive rock. Their music is distinguished by complex rhythmic structures, dominant bass lines, and often dark, acerbic, and introspective lyrics.

Over nearly four decades, Nomeansno built a rich and critically acclaimed discography. Albums such as Wrong (1989), often cited as their masterpiece, 0 + 2 = 1 (1991), and The Worldhood of the World (As Such) (1995) solidified their reputation as innovators. Their intense live performances and DIY ethic further cemented their cult status.

Nomeansno's style is difficult to categorize, oscillating between post-hardcore, proto-math rock, and jazz-punk. Their experimental approach and refusal of commercial compromises earned them the respect of numerous musicians and critics. They inspired a generation of bands exploring the boundaries of alternative rock and punk.

After a 37-year career, Nomeansno announced their dissolution in 2016, leaving behind a profound and lasting musical legacy, marked by unwavering artistic integrity and a significant influence on the global independent music landscape.
