My Own Private Alaska (MOPA) is a French trio from Toulouse, renowned for its avant-garde approach to screamo, blending intense vocals with complex piano compositions and dynamic drumming.
Formed in Toulouse, France, in 2007, My Own Private Alaska, often abbreviated MOPA, quickly distinguished itself with an unconventional lineup: a pianist (Tristan), a drummer (Loïc), and a vocalist (Mathia). The band forged a unique sound, fusing the emotional intensity of screamo with the melancholic virtuosity of the piano, thereby creating a genre often dubbed "piano-screamo." Their early demos and EPs established the foundation of this singular aesthetic.
It was with the release of their debut studio album, Amen, in 2010, that My Own Private Alaska truly captured international attention. The album was lauded for its audacity and its ability to navigate between passages of raw, tearing vocal brutality and disarmingly beautiful piano interludes. This duality became the band's hallmark, allowing them to transcend genre boundaries and attract a diverse audience.
Following a period of intense activity and touring, the band entered a prolonged hiatus, before making a notable return in 2017 with the album The Red & The Black. This second opus showcased an evolution in their sound while retaining the core essence of their musical identity. MOPA's influence lies in its ability to demonstrate that screamo can be profoundly melodic and experimental, paving new paths for the integration of classical instruments into extreme musical contexts.
