The War on Drugs is an American indie rock band from Philadelphia, known for its expansive, melancholic soundscapes, blending rock, Americana, and psychedelic elements.
Formed in 2005 in Philadelphia by Adam Granduciel and Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs quickly evolved from a lo-fi project into an acclaimed indie rock band. Following their debut album Wagonwheel Blues in 2008, Kurt Vile focused on his solo career, leaving Granduciel as the primary creative force. The band subsequently refined its sound, characterized by layers of reverberating guitars, atmospheric synthesizers, and Granduciel's distinctive vocals.
Their musical style is often described as a blend of heartland rock, psychedelic rock, and dream pop, with clear influences from Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Tom Petty. Their compositions are known for their progressive build-ups, creating moods that are both introspective and epic.
Critical and commercial success arrived with Slave Ambient (2011) and was solidified by Lost in the Dream (2014), an album widely hailed as a contemporary rock masterpiece. Their international breakthrough came with A Deeper Understanding (2017), which won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album, confirming their status as a cornerstone of modern indie rock. Their latest work, I Don't Live Here Anymore (2021), continued to explore and expand their sonic universe.
