The Ex is a Dutch band formed in 1979, celebrated for audaciously pushing the boundaries of post-punk and experimental rock, incorporating diverse musical influences and a DIY ethos.

Formed in 1979 in Wormer, Netherlands, The Ex emerged from the punk scene but quickly transcended its roots to develop a distinctive and unclassifiable sound. The band became emblematic of the DIY (Do It Yourself) spirit, managing their own production, distribution, and promotion, maintaining fierce independence throughout their career. Their political and social commitment has always been central to their artistic approach, resulting in incisive lyrics and a keen awareness of global issues.

Musically, The Ex forged a unique style, fusing post-punk with noise rock, experimental, and avant-garde elements. Their music is characterized by intricate guitar interplay, complex and often polyrhythmic drumming, and a propensity for live improvisation. Over the decades, they have incorporated varied influences, notably Ethiopian music and other African traditions, as well as jazz, constantly enriching their sonic palette.

Their extensive discography is marked by significant collaborations, notably with cellist Tom Cora on albums like Scrabbling at the Lock (1991) and And the Weathermen Shiver (1993), and with Ethiopian saxophonist Getatchew Mekurya. Albums such as Too Many Cowboys (1984), Joggers and Smoggers (1989), and Turn (2004) exemplify their continuous evolution and ability to reinvent themselves without ever compromising their artistic integrity. The Ex is recognized for its lasting influence on independent and experimental rock scenes, inspiring through their audacity and autonomy.
