Cold War Kids is an American indie rock band formed in 2004, renowned for its distinctive blend of post-punk, blues, and soul. Their raw sound and narrative lyrics have established them as a unique presence in the alternative scene.

Formed in 2004 in Long Beach, California, Cold War Kids quickly emerged as a distinctive voice in the indie rock scene. Initially comprising Nathan Willett (vocals, piano), Matt Maust (bass), Jonnie Russell (guitar), and Matt Aveiro (drums), the band forged a sound characterized by driving piano melodies, a prominent bass line, and Willett's expressive vocals. Their music draws from a lo-fi aesthetic, often likened to post-punk and blues-rock influences, with lyrics that explore themes of everyday life, morality, and the human condition with a touch of irony and melancholy.

Their debut album, Robbers & Cowards (2006), propelled them into the spotlight with tracks like "Hang Me Up to Dry" and "We Used to Vacation." This release was critically acclaimed for its raw energy and originality, laying the groundwork for their sonic identity. They continued to refine their style with Loyalty to Loyalty (2008), which explored more complex arrangements while retaining their characteristic emotional intensity.

Over the years, Cold War Kids has demonstrated an ability to evolve, integrating elements of pop and more mainstream rock while maintaining their artistic integrity. Albums such as Mine Is Yours (2011) and Hold My Home (2014) showcased a more polished production and an exploration of new musical dynamics, broadening their audience without compromising their distinctive sound. The band is renowned for their energetic and captivating live performances, solidifying their reputation as a major live act.
