Roots Manuva (Rodney Hylton Smith) is a British rapper and producer, an emblematic figure of UK hip-hop. His unique style fuses rap with dub, reggae, and electronic music.

Rodney Hylton Smith, better known as Roots Manuva, was born in 1972 in Stockwell, South London. Hailing from a family of Jamaican descent, he developed a distinctive musical approach, deeply influenced by reggae and dub sounds, which he skillfully integrated into a hip-hop framework. His deep voice and unique phrasing, often tinged with London slang, became his signature.

His career took off with the release of his critically acclaimed debut album, Brand New Second Hand, in 1999. However, it was Run Come Save Me in 2001, nominated for the Mercury Prize and featuring the iconic track "Witness (1 Hope)", that propelled him onto the international stage. This album solidified his reputation as an innovator, capable of navigating between dark productions and compelling rhythms.

Over the years, Roots Manuva continued to explore and redefine the boundaries of British hip-hop with works such as Awfully Deep (2006) and Slime & Reason (2008), released shortly before the concert in question. His lyrics, often introspective and socially conscious, address themes ranging from urban life to existential reflections, all wrapped in bold and experimental production.

An influential and respected artist, Roots Manuva is considered a pioneer of British hip-hop, having paved the way for many subsequent artists. His work is characterized by consistent artistic integrity and an ability to innovate while remaining true to his musical roots, making him a pivotal figure in contemporary music.
