Crystal Castles was a Canadian experimental electronic music duo formed in 2006, renowned for its abrasive, lo-fi sound blending chiptune, synth-punk, and ethereal vocals, leaving a significant mark on the indie scene.
Formed in Toronto in 2006 by producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass, Crystal Castles quickly emerged as a singular force in electronic music. Their distinctive sound fused elements of 8-bit chiptune, noise, synth-punk, and experimental electronica, characterized by abrasive melodies, pounding rhythms, and Glass's often distorted and ethereal vocals. The duo was also renowned for their energetic and chaotic live performances.
Their self-titled debut album, Crystal Castles (I), released in 2008, received critical acclaim and set the blueprint for their unique sonic aesthetic. They continued to refine their sound with Crystal Castles (II) in 2010 and Crystal Castles (III) in 2012, albums that solidified their reputation as innovators and pioneers of a dark, avant-garde sound. Their works often explored themes of dystopia, isolation, and rebellion.
Following Alice Glass's departure in 2014, the group continued with new vocalist Edith Frances, releasing the album Amnesty (I) in 2016. However, the original duo remained the most influential. Crystal Castles left an indelible mark on alternative electronic music, inspiring numerous artists with their uncompromising approach to production and sonic experimentation.
