music · ·La Loco, Paris

Jesu is Justin Broadrick's experimental music project, exploring a unique blend of post-metal, shoegaze, drone, and industrial elements.

Jesu is the musical project founded in 2003 by British musician Justin Broadrick, an iconic figure in the experimental scene and former member of Godflesh. Following Godflesh's disbandment, Broadrick created Jesu to explore more melodic and atmospheric soundscapes, while retaining a characteristic intensity and heaviness. The name "Jesu" is taken from a Godflesh song, symbolizing thematic continuity but a stylistic departure.

Jesu's style is characterized by a distinctive fusion of post-metal, shoegaze, and drone, enriched with industrial and sometimes doom-metal influences. Compositions are often slow, massive, featuring saturated guitars and enveloping sound textures, contrasting with ethereal melodies and soothing vocals. This approach has allowed Jesu to forge a recognizable sound that is both heavy and contemplative, dark and luminous.

Jesu's discography is prolific, highlighted by albums such as the self-titled Jesu (2004), which laid the groundwork for its sonic aesthetic, and Conqueror (2007), which refined its blend of shoegaze melancholy and post-metal power. Broadrick is the primary architect of the project, often joined by collaborators like Diarmuid Dalton on bass and Ted Parsons on drums.

Jesu's influence is notable within the post-metal and experimental scenes, having inspired numerous artists with its ability to marry sonic brutality with melodic beauty. The project continues to evolve, exploring various collaborations and facets of its sonic identity, solidifying its reputation as an avant-garde and deeply expressive musical entity.
