music · ·La Loco, Paris

High on Fire is an American heavy metal band, formed in 1998 by guitarist and vocalist Matt Pike. They are renowned for their potent and relentless blend of stoner, doom, and thrash metal.

Formed in Oakland, California, by Matt Pike after the dissolution of his previous band, Sleep, High on Fire quickly established itself with a distinctive sound. The band, consisting of Pike (guitar, vocals), Des Kensel (drums), and various bassists before Jeff Matz joined in 2006, forged a sonic identity characterized by crushing guitar riffs, massive drum rhythms, and Pike's gruff vocals.

Their music is a raw and modernized homage to heavy metal pioneers like Motörhead and Black Sabbath, while incorporating elements of sludge and thrash metal. From their debut album, The Art of Self-Defense (2000), High on Fire demonstrated an ability to create a dense atmosphere and raw energy. Albums like Blessed Black Wings (2005) and Death Is This Communion (2007) solidified their reputation, refining their approach without ever compromising their power.

Over the years, High on Fire has continued to evolve, exploring lyrical themes often epic and mythological, rooted in increasingly complex instrumentation. Their album Electric Messiah (2018) was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, attesting to their lasting influence and their status as iconic figures in the contemporary heavy metal scene.
