music · ·L'Aeronef, Lille

The Flaming Lips are an iconic American band, celebrated for their psychedelic and experimental music, blending alternative rock with grandiose orchestrations. Their prolific career is defined by constant innovation and immersive live performances.

Formed in the early 1980s in Oklahoma City, The Flaming Lips emerged from the American underground scene with an initially noisy, post-punk sound. Led by frontman Wayne Coyne, the band quickly evolved towards a more complex sonic aesthetic, deeply infused with psychedelia and experimentation. Their early albums laid the groundwork for a singular artistic approach, characterized by introspective lyrics and unconventional musical structures.

The mid-1990s saw their recognition expand with albums like Transmissions from the Satellite Heart (1993), which featured the unexpected hit "She Don't Use Jelly," and Clouds Taste Metallic (1995). These works refined their unique blend of pop melodies and avant-garde sonic textures. However, it was with The Soft Bulletin, released in 1999, that the band reached a critical peak. This album marked a shift towards a more symphonic, emotional, and grandiose sound, solidifying their reputation as innovators.

Following The Soft Bulletin, The Flaming Lips continued to explore new musical avenues, notably with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002), which achieved even wider commercial and critical success. The band is also renowned for its extravagant and sensory live performances, utilizing confetti, giant balloons, video projections, and elaborate costumes. Their influence stems from their ability to fuse the experimental with the melodic, creating works that are both accessible and profoundly original, inspiring countless artists within alternative and psychedelic rock.
