Pavement is an American indie rock band formed in 1989, a pioneer of the 90s lo-fi sound. Their music features deconstructed melodies and cryptic lyrics, profoundly influencing the alternative scene.
Pavement emerged from Stockton, California, in 1989, founded by Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg. The band quickly gained recognition for its lo-fi aesthetic, unconventional compositions, and often abstract, witty lyrics. Their early EPs and the seminal album Slanted and Enchanted (1992) defined a raw, nonchalant sound that set them apart from the prevailing trends of the era.
Over the course of their albums, Pavement refined their approach without ever losing their identity. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994) offered more accessible tracks while retaining their experimental signature, while Wowee Zowee (1995) explored bold stylistic diversity. Their subsequent records, Brighten the Corners (1997) and Terror Twilight (1999), showcased a more polished production but remained rooted in their singular artistic vision.
Pavement's style is often described as a blend of indie rock, lo-fi, and alternative rock, with touches of post-punk and jangle pop. They are renowned for their relaxed yet intellectual approach, intertwined guitars, and Malkmus's distinctive vocals. Their influence on subsequent generations of independent bands is immense, with Pavement being considered one of the most important and revered bands of the 1990s. After disbanding in 1999, the group has reformed for several tours.
