Femi Kuti - 23 October 1999 - L'Aeronef - Lille

music · ·L'Aeronef, Lille

Femi Kuti is an heir and innovator of afrobeat, son of the legendary Fela Kuti. His music fuses African rhythms, jazz, and funk, driven by politically charged lyrics advocating for social justice.

Femi Kuti, born Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti in 1962, stands as an emblematic figure of contemporary afrobeat. The eldest son of pioneer Fela Kuti, he inherited not only musical talent but also his father's profound political commitment. From the age of 16, Femi joined his father's band, Egypt 80, where he honed his skills on saxophone and keyboards, absorbing the foundations of afrobeat.

In 1986, Femi Kuti formed his own band, Positive Force, marking the beginning of an independent career where he sought to develop his unique sound. While remaining true to afrobeat's roots – a hypnotic blend of funk, jazz, traditional Nigerian rhythms, and powerful chants – he incorporated more modern sounds and renewed energy. His lyrics, often in English and Yoruba, denounce corruption, poverty, and social injustice in Nigeria and beyond, making his music a potent vehicle for awareness.

Femi Kuti's discography is marked by acclaimed albums, including "Shoki Shoki" (1998), which became an international breakthrough, and "Fight to Win" (2001), featuring collaborations with American artists. He has received multiple Grammy Award nominations and is renowned for his electrifying live performances. Femi Kuti continues to keep the afrobeat legacy alive while propelling it into new horizons, notably through The Shrine, the Lagos club where he regularly performs, thus perpetuating his father's spirit.
