Mami Chan Band - 19 March 1998 - L'Aéronef - Lille

music · ·L'Aéronef, Lille

Mami Chan Band was a multinational experimental pop project formed by Andrew Sharpley and Mami Chan (Mami Sato), a Japanese artist based in France. The group was known for its eclectic approach, blending childlike melodies, electronic sounds, and multilingual lyrics.

Founded by Andrew Sharpley, a key figure in experimental Parisian music, and Japanese artist Mami Chan (Mami Sato), the Mami Chan Band distinguished itself with its unique blend of experimental pop and electronic elements. Mami Chan, a pianist, songwriter, and sound artist, was born in Tokyo in 1963 and moved to France in 1993, where she fostered a "happy underground" by synchronizing diverse musical geographies and genres.

The band's style was characterized by a fusion of diverse elements: from "deranged yet cutesy melodica and bass waltz" to "breathless toybox pop," all while maintaining a sweetness and charm that softened their experimental edge. Their live performances were often described as a whirlwind of melodious turns, sometimes incorporating seductive poses and screaming.

Mami Chan Band released notable albums such as "Live!" in 2001 and "No Mort" in 2009. The band's recorded live output primarily dates between 1999 and 2001. Mami Chan also pursued a solo career, releasing the album "Onomatopée" and "la Nuit de pollen" in 1999. She passed away in 2020 at the age of 56.
