music · ·L'Aeronef, Lille

Deftones is an American band formed in 1988, renowned for its avant-garde approach to alternative metal. They blend heavy riffs with ethereal atmospheres and intense vocal dynamics.

Deftones, formed in Sacramento, California, in 1988, quickly emerged as a major and singular force in the alternative metal landscape. Comprising Chino Moreno (vocals), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Chi Cheng (bass, replaced by Sergio Vega in 2009), and Abe Cunningham (drums), the band initially forged a heavy, aggressive sound, rooted in the nascent nu-metal scene but with artistic ambitions that transcended genre conventions.

Their debut album, Adrenaline (1995), laid the groundwork for their distinctive sound, but it was with Around the Fur (1997) that Deftones truly began to define their unique identity. This album showcased their ability to blend brutal riffs with ethereal soundscapes and captivating melodies, often driven by Chino Moreno's versatile vocals, which range from anxious whispers to visceral screams.

Throughout their career, notably with the acclaimed album White Pony (2000), the band continued to explore and experiment, integrating elements of shoegaze, trip-hop, and post-rock into their metal foundation. This constant evolution has earned them a reputation as innovators, crafting music that is simultaneously dense, atmospheric, and deeply emotional.

Deftones' influence extends far beyond the confines of metal, inspiring numerous artists with their stylistic audacity and refusal to conform. They are celebrated for their ability to create complex atmospheres and intense dynamics, solidifying their status as pioneers of experimental and alternative metal.
