music · ·L'Aeronef, Lille

Korn is an American band, a pioneer of nu metal, formed in 1993 in Bakersfield, California. Their distinctive sound, blending seven-string guitars, slap bass, and expressive vocals, profoundly impacted the 90s music scene.

Formed in 1993 in Bakersfield, California, Korn is widely recognized as one of the foundational architects of the nu metal genre. The band consists of Jonathan Davis on vocals, James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch on guitars, Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu on bass, and Ray Luzier on drums (since 2007, succeeding David Silveria). Their musical approach revolutionized alternative metal by incorporating elements of hip-hop, groove metal, and industrial music, while exploring dark and introspective themes.

Their self-titled debut album, Korn, released in 1994, immediately established their signature sound: downtuned seven-string guitars creating a heavy, dissonant atmosphere, a slapped and syncopated bass, and Jonathan Davis's unique vocal range, alternating between guttural screams, scatting, and melancholic melodies. This album, followed by Life Is Peachy (1996), quickly garnered a devoted fanbase and laid the groundwork for a new movement.

Their major commercial breakthrough came with Follow the Leader (1998) and Issues (1999), which propelled the band to the top of global charts. These albums solidified their status as nu metal icons, influencing an entire generation of musicians. Over the decades, Korn has continued to experiment with their sound while maintaining their recognizable identity, tackling subjects such as alienation, pain, and anger with raw authenticity.
